Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a group of common metabolic disorders that share the phenotype of hyper-glycemia. DM is classified as Type1 DM and Type2 DM.

Type1 DM results from autoimmune beta cell destruction that leads to insulin deficiency.

Type 2 DM is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by variable degree of insulin resistance, impaired insulin secretion and increased glucose production. Type 2 DM is preceded by a period of abnormal glucose homeostasis classified as impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)

The world wide prevalence of DM has risen dramatically over the past 2 decades. The prevalence of Type 2 DM is expected to rise more rapidly because of increasing obesity and reduced physical activity. Current prevalence is estimated to be around 7% of the worldwide population.

DM is the leading cause of end stage Renal Disease and Adult Blindness.
